Nepal Set for Nationwide Parliamentary Elections on March 5

Nepal holds nationwide parliamentary elections on March 5 to elect 275 members of the House of Representatives.

The election comes six months after the political movement that led to the fall of the government led by Khadga Prasad Sharma Oli.

Thousands of Polling Centres Prepared

The Election Commission has completed all preparations for voting.

Across the country, authorities have set up:

  • 10,967 polling centres
  • 23,112 polling stations
  • 143 temporary polling stations

Separate lines will be arranged for men and women.

Senior citizens, people with disabilities, and those with chronic illnesses will receive priority while voting.

Special Arrangements for Remote Districts

Nepal’s difficult terrain makes election logistics challenging.

To solve this, helicopters have been used to deliver voting materials to remote mountain areas.

Officials also plan to use helicopters to collect ballot boxes from 61 polling locations in 15 districts, including areas from Taplejung to Darchula.

Strong Security Across the Country

Security forces have been deployed nationwide to ensure a peaceful election.

Personnel from the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police will guard polling stations and ballot boxes.

Authorities have arranged a three-layer security system around the voting process.

Seats and Voters

The election will fill 275 seats in the House of Representatives:

  • 165 seats through the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system
  • 110 seats through proportional representation (PR)

The Election Commission says about 18.9 million voters are eligible to vote.

Documents Required to Vote

Voters whose names appear on the voter list can cast their ballot using a voter ID card.

If the voter ID card is not available, one of these documents can be used:

  • Nepali citizenship certificate
  • Driver’s licence
  • Passport
  • National identity card
  • Original land ownership certificate

Results Expected Soon

Officials say vote counting will begin after ballot boxes reach counting centres.

Initial results are expected within 24 hours after counting begins.

Authorities say the overall environment for the election remains peaceful and voter-friendly, raising hopes for a smooth voting process across Nepal.
