Supreme Court Open During Election Holiday for Habeas Corpus Cases

The Supreme Court will remain open during the three-day election holiday declared by the government starting March 4. The Court will also operate on March 8, which is observed as International Women’s Day.

Although most government offices will be closed, the country’s apex court will continue limited services to ensure that urgent cases are not delayed.

Court to Operate for Limited Hours

According to the Court administration, services will be available from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM during the public holidays.

Supreme Court spokesperson Arjun Koirala said the Court decided to remain open to handle sensitive and time-bound matters.

Focus on Habeas Corpus Petitions

During the holiday period, the Court will hear writs of habeas corpus.

A habeas corpus petition is filed when a person is believed to be unlawfully detained. It is a legal remedy that protects an individual’s personal liberty and fundamental rights.

Because these cases involve urgent matters of freedom, the Court hears them even on public holidays.

Court Urges Timely Filing

The Supreme Court has urged concerned individuals and legal representatives to file their petitions within the designated hours.

Officials said the decision reflects the judiciary’s commitment to protecting constitutional rights without interruption, even during national holidays.
