Pro-Monarchy Groups Plan Grand Welcome for Former King Despite Airport Ban

Kathmandu, February 13 — Pro-monarchy groups in Nepal are moving forward with plans to welcome former king Gyanendra Shah in Kathmandu, even after authorities banned public gatherings around Tribhuvan International Airport.

The Kathmandu District Administration Office issued a prohibitory order on Thursday. The order bans gatherings of more than five people in and around the airport area. Officials said the restriction is needed to maintain security and public safety.

Authorities also confirmed that no permission was given for any rally, procession, or public event near the airport.

Despite the ban, monarchist leaders say they will continue with their programme. They said they will not organise events inside the airport area. However, they plan to escort the former king from outside the restricted zone to his residence, Nirmal Niwas, through a road procession.

Several royalist leaders and groups have called on supporters to join the welcome. Messages on social media have urged people to gather in Kathmandu to give the former king a “grand reception.”

Security agencies are preparing for large crowds. However, officials said it is difficult to estimate turnout because organisers have described the event as a spontaneous gathering rather than a formally organised rally.

The event comes just weeks before Nepal’s snap parliamentary elections on March 5. Officials say the restrictions are meant to prevent unrest and protect the election environment.

Police and security agencies said they will stay alert and deploy forces as needed to ensure public safety.

The renewed activity by pro-monarchy groups signals a fresh push to regain political influence. With elections approaching, their mobilisation has again become a national political issue.
