Kathmandu, February 7, 2026 — Veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa, one of Nepal’s most iconic and beloved film stars, passed away on Friday at the age of 68 while undergoing treatment in Kathmandu. Thapa’s death marks a profound loss for the Nepali film industry and audiences across South Asia.

Thapa was receiving medical care at Norvic Hospital in Thapathali when his health suddenly worsened. Doctors suspect a cardiac arrest as the cause of his death, according to hospital sources.

Born on May 19, 1960, in Dang, Nepal, Sunil Thapa began his journey in cinema with a passionate interest in arts and performance that blossomed into a remarkable career spanning more than four decades.

He first appeared in films in the early 1980s and quickly became known for his powerful screen presence and versatility. His early work included appearances in Hindi cinema before he made a lasting impact on Nepali films. Over his long career, Thapa acted in more than 300 films across multiple languages, including Nepali, Bollywood, Tamil, and Bhojpuri cinema, earning him admiration from both critics and audiences.

Among his most iconic roles was the character “Rate Kaila” in the Nepali classic Chino, which remains one of his most memorable performances and cemented his status as a cultural figure in Nepal. International audiences also celebrated his work when he portrayed the boxing coach M. Narjit Singh in the critically acclaimed Bollywood film Mary Kom (2014), starring Priyanka Chopra.

Aside from acting, Sunil Thapa was also known for mentoring young performers and contributing to the artistic community in Nepal. His influence on character acting, especially in villainous and intense dramatic roles, helped shape modern Nepali cinema.
