Kathmandu, January 29 — A fire that broke out on the upper floor of Hotel Woodland in the busy Durbar Marg area of Kathmandu on Thursday morning has been brought under control, authorities said.
The blaze reportedly started at around 10:15 am in the hotel’s upper floor, believed to be linked to the club or lounge area, according to police and hotel officials. Early indications suggest the fire may have been triggered by an electrical short circuit, though investigators are still working to confirm the exact cause.

Firefighters from both Kathmandu and Lalitpur Metropolitan Cities were promptly mobilised to the scene, with multiple fire engines and personnel from the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force assisting in the operation to extinguish the flames.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze was largely confined to the upper sections of the building, and emergency crews were able to contain it after several hours of coordinated effort. Although smoke and flames were visible from nearby streets during the initial response, the fire did not spread to adjacent properties.

Officials confirmed that no injuries or casualties have been reported so far. Guests and staff were evacuated safely earlier in the response, and no structural collapse was observed as firefighters worked to fully suppress the blaze.
Police said they have begun preliminary investigations and are reviewing electrical and safety systems within the hotel to determine whether safety protocol lapses may have contributed to the incident. A detailed assessment of property damage is ongoing, with hotel management cooperating with authorities.
Durbar Marg, one of Kathmandu’s most prominent commercial and tourist districts, has seen fires in the past linked to electrical faults in older buildings, highlighting ongoing concerns about building safety standards in high-density urban areas.
Further updates on the investigation and any official statements from fire authorities are expected later in the day.
