Nepal Police Warns Public as Air Pollution Rises in Kathmandu

Air pollution levels have increased sharply in Kathmandu and other major cities in Nepal. Authorities are urging people to take precautions to protect their health.

In a public notice, Avi Narayan Kafle, spokesperson for Nepal Police, asked citizens to reduce outdoor exposure as pollution levels continue to rise.

Officials say the situation could pose serious health risks, especially for vulnerable groups.

Pollution Levels Becoming Dangerous

Recent air quality readings show that pollution in Kathmandu Valley has reached unhealthy levels.

According to air quality monitoring platforms, the Air Quality Index (AQI) in Kathmandu has recently crossed 190, which falls into the “unhealthy” category for all groups.

At times, the city has even recorded AQI levels above 300, considered hazardous to human health.

Experts warn that prolonged exposure to such pollution can lead to breathing problems, eye irritation, and long-term lung diseases.

Six Key Safety Suggestions from Police

Nepal Police has issued a six-point advisory to help people stay safe during this period of high pollution.

The advisory includes:

  • Stay indoors unless it is necessary to go outside.
  • Reduce outdoor activities during high pollution hours.
  • Use face masks when going outside.
  • Avoid burning garbage near homes.
  • Share vehicles or reduce private vehicle use.
  • Seek medical help immediately if breathing problems occur.

Authorities also advise people to monitor their health closely during this period.

Children and Elderly at Higher Risk

Health experts say children, elderly people, and those with respiratory diseases face the greatest risk.

Doctors warn that polluted air contains very small particles that can enter the lungs and even the bloodstream. Long-term exposure can increase the risk of asthma, heart problems, and other respiratory illnesses.

Because of this, vulnerable groups are advised to remain indoors as much as possible.

Why Pollution Is Increasing

Environmental experts say several factors are contributing to rising pollution levels in Nepal.

These include:

  • Lack of rainfall
  • Forest fires in nearby regions
  • Vehicle emissions
  • Dust from construction activities
  • Open burning of waste

Kathmandu’s valley geography also traps polluted air, allowing smog and dust to remain in the atmosphere for longer periods.

Government Urges Public to Stay Alert

The Ministry of Health and Population (Nepal) has also asked citizens to remain cautious.

Officials recommend wearing masks, avoiding heavy outdoor exercise, and protecting children and elderly family members during this period.

Until rainfall or stronger winds improve air conditions, authorities say the public must remain careful and follow health advisories.
